How to find the right Headshot Photographer
Just about every single person I see for a headshot session says early in our shoot they are not photogenic. In fact, I’m surprised if I don’t hear this. It’s pretty common to hear I’m not photogenic. I get it and I empathize with everyone. I’m not particularly photogenic myself. Most people I photograph do not like getting their picture taken.
There are a few tips I can give you about how to look your best. Rest, makeup, and clothing, etc are a good place to start. I’d say, however, that 90% of the responsibility rests in the hands of the photographer.
Capturing your personality isn’t something every photographer knows how to do. A nice camera and good lighting does not mean that they are able to coach you to look your best for your headshot.
My advice would be to find a photographer who specializes in headshot photography. We go to a specialist for the doctor, or a lawyer . You should plan on going to a specialist for your headshot.
Ask your headshot photographer what training they have in headshot photography. Ask if they belong to a learning community of specialists that focuses only on headshots. Ask how many headshot clients they photograph in a year.
Look through their portfolio to see if you like their headshot style.
You should see a consistent look. Then trust that every one of those people also felt they were un-photogenic as well.
Google reviews speaking to the ‘experience’ of having your headshot taken are important. Read between the lines.
Again, I know some amazing wildlife and rock and roll photographers. You’ll often see them announce that this weekend is headshot weekend. To me that’s not going to produce a good headshot. If I’m a country singer and I announce that this weekend my show will be a rap show…. you are not likely to hold out much hope that it’ll be great.
If you hate having your photo taken. If you don’t look forward to the bright lights in your face. Then search for a headshot photographer who you can imagine working with comfortably
It should be an uplifting, good for the ego, experience. The good ones are out there! If you have questions I’d be happy to help. You can contact me here. Good luck in your search!
