I love when something this cool happens. It’s a sign sign – Everywhere a sign!
That happened to me a while back.
I do some work for my friend Brian Warren who owns Bounder Magazine. Bounder is a magazine for, by and about men. The stories are about fishing, hunting, music and cars. Not that other kind of men’s magazine. It’s pretty down to earth. So was this experience.
Brian called me and said, we’re doing our annual music issue, so can you go and get a headshot of Les Emmerson.
Les Emmerson is Les Emmerson of the Five Man Electrical Band. Famous for their 1971 song Signs which I grew up listening to. For sure I’ll go photograph him!
We spent an hour together taking some photos at his studio board where he spends most of his time these days.
A real down to earth fellow who was happy to tell stories about his friends from the old days. Friends like The Stampeders, The Guess Who, Gordon Lightfoot, Ronnie Hawkins and all of the big Canadian bands of the 70’s.
These are all bands whos albums are still in my Mother’s basement somewhere.
Now he’s on the other side of my camera and I’m happy to say that this photo of Les captures his friendly side just about right. There were so many stories I didn’t know whether to keep taking the photos or to sit and listen. I did both.
Bounder is available around the city now but if you can’t wait and want to read it online just check it out at www.bounder.ca
