What background colour should you use for your Headshot?
People ask me all the time. What background colour should you use for your headshot? White is my marquis look and is what I think I do best. Love it! There’s a bunch of reasons I love white backgrounds. It’s easy for your designer to work with if your Headshot is for a website or marketing materials. White draws the attention to YOU. It’s crisp, clean and professional. It might even look a bit high-fashion. Either way you can’t go wrong. BUT not everyone can achieve this hi-key look properly. There’s a trick so be sure to see plenty of examples of the photographer’s work.
The next most popular is that professional grey background. Nothing says business more than grey. You don’t even need to be in a business suit for grey to look all business. It sets a mood and has been a favourite for decades.
Least popular but still a huge favourite and even dramatic looking is the black background. Black adds mystery and looks great in black and white photographs. Some people choose black because they are hanging a headshot portrait on a wall with others. The black background can be part of the finished look of the grouping and even add to the decor. I don’t recommend this for your marketing materials or website unless of course the website is on a black background.
There is a technique to each and every look. It is the sort of thing you will want to establish with your photographer before your headshot shoot. The background is part of the overall look you’ll want to achieve so don’t go with ‘whatever’. Think about what would look best for your personal brand.
