It’s one of the most common questions I get asked before a session: “Todd, should I wear
jewellery for my headshot?”
Jewellery is a great way to express your personal style in everyday life. But when it comes to
professional headshots, my perspective changes a little.
The primary goal of a great business portrait is simple: I want to draw the viewer’s attention
straight to your eyes.
Confidence, trust, and approachability all live in the eyes. When a client, a recruiter, or a
potential business partner lands on your LinkedIn profile or your company’s “About Us” page,
you want them to feel an immediate, human connection with you.
Jewellery, by its very design, is meant to catch the light and draw the eye. Unfortunately, that
means it often works against you in a headshot, acting as a visual speed bump that pulls
attention away from your face.
Why I advise against statement pieces
When clients wear large hoops, chunky necklaces, or heavily reflective statement pieces, I
notice the viewer’s eye goes straight to the accessory instead of their expression.
On top of that, big or trendy jewellery can quickly date your photo. A timeless, professional
headshot shouldn’t look like a time capsule tied to whatever accessory happened to be popular
the year we took the shot.
My recommendation: Keep it simple (or skip it entirely)
If jewellery is a signature part of your everyday look and you feel naked without it, don’t stress.
You don’t have to banish it completely—just keep it very minimal.
Skip the big stuff: I always recommend leaving the large earrings, heavy necklaces, and
shiny statement pieces at home.
Go for studs: Small, understated studs or a very delicate chain are usually fine, as long as
they don’t bounce light into the camera or create distracting reflections.
When in doubt, take it off: Honestly? Having none at all is almost always better.
Have a look at these two images…
With Jewellery
Without Jewellery
The difference between these two images is subtle, but you can feel it. Without the distraction
of jewellery, the focus shifts entirely to your expression, your connection, and your presence.
Let’s capture the real you
A great headshot isn’t about hiding who you are—it’s about removing the visual noise so your
true personality and professionalism shine through.
